ANN ARBOR, Mich. - The No. 20 Purdue wrestling team won three matches in a 22-12 loss to No. 18 Michigan Friday in Cliff Keen Arena. Cashé Quiroga, Danny Sabatello and No. 13/16Braden Atwood provided dramatic victories as the Boilermakers slipped to 3-3, 0-3 Big Ten. Michigan improved to 5-2 overall while picking up its first win in conference action.

Quiroga got Purdue on the board with a thrilling 6-5 tiebreaker decision as he upset No. 15/20 Rossi Bruno at 133 pounds. The redshirt senior took the Wolverine down in the first and second periods, but after escaping from Quiroga following his second takedown, Bruno got one of his own to take a 5-4 advantage into the final period. Starting the third period from bottom, Quiroga evened the score at 5-5 with an escape to force extended time.

Neither wrestler was able to score in the 60 second sudden victory session, leading to a pair of 30 second tiebreakers. The Boilermaker had first choice, taking bottom, and with just eight ticks remaining on the clock, eluded Bruno's hold for the point. Quiroga rode the momentum he built and kept Bruno down for the duration of the next tiebreaker for the win to improve to 7-3.

Purdue won back-to-back weights and took a 6-3 lead in the dual courtesy of Sabatello's 6-1 decision of Angelo Latora at 141 pounds. Sabatello scored a pair of takedowns, an escape at the start of the second period and accumulated 1:06 worth of riding time en route to his 14th win of the season. The redshirt sophomore (14-7) pushed his team-leading season takedown total to 44.

Atwood provided bonus points for the Boilermakers and cut into Michigan's lead by pinning Chris Heald in 6:18, to put the dual at 18-12 with one bout to go. After a scoreless first period, Atwood deferred choice in the second, to which Heald choose to start from neutral. Atwood seized the opportunity and struck for his first takedown, dropping the Wolverine on his back and riding him out for the remaining 1:45 of the period. The redshirt junior added to his lead with an escape after starting the third period from bottom. Atwood struck again, taking Heald down and immediately went to work on a tilt and was awarded a three-point nearfall. Seconds later Heald's shoulders were flat on the mat and Atwood got his fifth win by fall.

The 17-5 Delphi, Ind., native has now defeated Heald in all four meetings this season and has pinned him twice. The fall is also the 20th of his career, where he is 15th on Purdue's all-time falls list. Watch Atwood pinning Heald here.

Despite suffering a 7-3 loss, 149-pounder Brandon Nelsen moved into a tie for 17th on the career reversals list by getting a third-period switch on Michigan's No. 13/12 Eric Grajales. The redshirt junior (10-8) now has 30 reversals to his credit.

The Boilermakers are back in action Sunday as they take on top-ranked Penn State (7-0, 1-0 Big Ten) at 2 p.m. ET. Live results from Rec Hall will be available on Trackwrestling and the dual will be streamed live via GoPSUsports.com's All-Access.
