Movers and Shakers
• #1 Blair Academy seeks out the best competition year in and year out. Last week, they traveled to Ohio and faced #8 Massillon Perry on Friday evening beating them 37-15. After the meet, they went to the southwest part of the state for their annual tussle with #5 Graham in St. Paris defeating them 38-20 further supplanting them as the nation’s best team. This coming Saturday on January 11, they compete in the NHSCA Festival and will square off against prep rival #7 Wyoming Seminary. In a matter of eight calendar days, Blair Academy will have had dual meets with three of America’s top eight teams.

• Apple Valley won The Clash National High School Duals in Rochester, Minnesota in thrilling fashion by upending #4 Oak Park-River Forest in a match that came down to a winner-take-all bout and the scored tied at 27 entering 152 pounds. Dayton Racer reversed Matthew Rundell to win 4-2 and give Apple Valley their fifth Clash championship. They had another statement win by defeating #6 Bergen Catholic 38-12 in dominating fashion. For their efforts, Apple Valley is the #2 ranked team nationally this week. Also in the championship bracket, Oak Park-River Forest handed Bergen Catholic their second loss of the day by a score of 35-25.

• The Midwest was the epicenter of high school wrestling this weekend with The Clash in Minnesota and Cheesehead being held at Kaukauna High School in Wisconsin. #11 Montini Catholic was the team champion with 554.5 points, ten place winners including five finalists, and two champions in Vince Turk (138) and Michael Johnson (285). #24 Kaukauna enters the Top 25 for the first time this year after finishing in second place with 521 points and eight place winners. Robert Lee won the 132 weight class for his host school, the Galloping Ghosts which may be the best mascot in all of high school. Earlier this season, Kaukauna toted a championship trophy from the Five Seasons Duals at Cedar Rapids Washington in Iowa. They beat three of Iowa’s better squads: Linn-Mar 33-32 in the finals, #25 Bettendorf in the semifinal, and top-ranked in class 1A Alburnett.

• Western power’s came to Clovis, California for the Doc Buchanan Invitational, which has been dubbed by Clovis assistant coach Adam Tirapelle as the “Ironman of the West”. The host school won easily with 239.5 points, outdistancing runner-up Buchanan by 79.5 points. Clovis was once again led by Nick Nevills who pinned his way through the tournament at 285 pounds.
