Chattanooga, TN - More than just being the toughest in-season tournament in collegiate wrestling, the 2014 Southern Scuffle, held on Jan. 1st and 2nd, serves as a prelude the to the NCAA Championships. The top two teams in the country, #1 Penn State and #2 Minnesota, will be in attendance along with seven other teams ranked top twenty nationally: #4 Oklahoma State, #10 Cornell, #11 Missouri, #13 Stanford, #15 Iowa State, #17 Virginia and #18 Pittsburgh. Top ranked wrestlers in 6 of the 10 NCAA weight classes will be at this year's event as well.

3x defending NCAA champions Penn State will come in as the favorite, boasting ranked wrestlers in all ten weight classes, including #1 ranked wrestlers David Taylor (165lbs) and Ed Ruth (184lbs). Not to be outdone, Minnesota, who took 3rd in last year's NCAA team race, brings to the Southern Scuffle ranked wrestlers in nine out of ten weight classes, including #1 ranked wrestlers Nick Dardanes (149lbs), Scott Schiller (197lbs) and Tony Nelson (HWT). Wrestling fans from across the country will pay special attention to the battle between Big Ten foes here as Minnesota seems the only team capable of knocking off the '13-'14 Nittany Lions.

Four NCAA champions will compete at the 2014 Southern Scuffle: David Taylor, Chris Perry, Ed Ruth, Tony Nelson. More: this year's event hosts 135 NCAA qualifiers and an astounding 34 All Americans.

The 2014 Southern Scuffle is as good as it gets for wrestling fans -as good as it gets until the NCAA Championships anyway. The tournament gets bigger and more competitive every year, and it has evolved into the ultimate proving ground for in-season college wrestling.
