Iowa walked away with a dual win, but their hosts were anything but gracious. Edinboro won three of the first five bouts to stake the Fighting Scots to a 13-8 at the break.
One of those lightweight wins came from the 6th-ranked AJ Schopp as he upset #1-Tony Ramos.
Schopp was able to score when he high-legged over a Ramos shot early in the first. A scramble ensued that saw Schopp eventually secure both ankles on the edge of the mat. Schopp used his great ability on top to rack up over 1:47 riding time to end the first period.
Ramos chose neutral in the second and the period remained scoreless until late. That's when Schopp shot a wrap arm and Ramos eventually countered to tie it at two right at the buzzer.
Schopp escaped in the third to make it 3-2 and riding time was erased. With about twenty seconds remaining in the match, Ramos got to rear standing but was unable to convert for points in what would be the deciding sequence and secure Schopp's upset.
MaComb Fieldhouse was ignited and the momentum continued at the next two weights. #2-Mitchell Port (141) earned a fall over Josh Dziewa and #6-David Habat earned a 13-4 major over Brody Grothus. After four bouts, the Scots had their biggest lead at 13-4.
That's when the Hawks got on a roll. Led by NCAA Champion Derek St. John (157), Iowa won the next five bouts to go up 22-13 before Edinboro Heaevyweight Ernest James recorded a fall over Tomas Lira to close out scoring 22-19.
