After Breakout Performance, Terao Commits To American
Willie Saylor, Editor
He caught the attention of scouts in 2012 when, in Fargo Cadets he went 3rd in Greco and 4th in Freestyle. That fall, he continued his ascendance when he battle through a monster bracket to place 7th at Super 32.
But for Hawaii’s Josh Terao, his moment of arrival was certainly last weekend in Fargo. Terao won Junior Greco and then had a breakthrough tournament in Freestyle where he beat 2x defending Champion Tommy Thorn en route to a 7th place finish. A performance that certainly had college suitors knocking.
On Sunday, the Mid-Pacific Institute product gave his verbal commitment to continue his career at American University to wrestle for Teague Moore. The 7th ranked Terao projects as a 125/133lb prospect and will be reunited with his brother, David, who went 28-14 this year for the Eagles.
We had a chance to ask Josh about his decision.
WS: What ultimately made American the right place for you?
JT: American was an easy choice because of my brother being there. I knew all the coaches and befriended the whole team.
WS: Other schools were you considering?
JT: Cal Poly, Bucknell, Oregon State, Bown, Harvard, George Mason, Iowa State, and Air Force. About five more coaches contacted me after Fargo.
WS: What do you want to study at American?
JT: I want to major in biology, premed, and go to med school.
WS: What weight do you see yourself wrestling in college?
JT: 125, or 133. I plan on lifting to get stronger.
