It seems like the North Carolina wrestling program comes up with a big recruiting class at least every other year. In 2011, the Tar Heel haul was ranked 12th in the country. And after an unranked class last year, Coach CD Mock is off to a banner start for 2014.
Jack Clark, ranked at #27 on the Senior Big Board had previously committed. On Thursday, they received a verbal commitment from Georgia standout Chip Ness.
A three-time State Champion, Ness has made waves on the national scene as well, reaching the finals of both Fargo (2012) and FloNationals (2013) to go along with a 4th place finish at last year’s Super32.
Ness is currently ranked 5th in the country at 195 after moving up from 182. He also appears on the Senior Big Board as the #38 prospect in the nation.
We had a chance to speak with Chip on his decision.
WS: Why did you ultimately choose UNC?
CN: There’s a lot of upside there. They are kind of rebuilding. And I can redshirt behind Utley before getting in to the starting line-up. I was also attracted to their academics. They have a really good Finance program.
WS: What is your relationship with the coaches and wrestlers at North Carolina like?
CN: I’ve wanted to go there since 6th grade. Once I met Kolat, I knew it was the place. He’s the type of coach I want in my corner.
WS: What other schools were you considering?
CN: I was also looking at Iowa State, Virginia Tech, and Maryland. Ultimately it came down to North Carolina and Virginia.
WS: What are your plans for the rest of the summer?
CN: Taking some time off, mostly. Later I’ll be training. School starts earlier here. Early August. So about mid-August I’ll start gearing up for Super32.
WS: You’ve been trying to gain weight. Are you targeting 197 in college or 184?
CN: I’ve been trying to put on muscle mass. That’s the area of my game I think I could use the most improvement. I weigh about 202 right now, and I’m planning on going 184 in college.
WS: Will you be at 195 or 182 for Super32?
CN: Probably 195. Unless (Michael) Pixely is at 182. I’d like to get a chance to wrestle him again.
