PA Champ Galasso Goes Big Red
Willie Saylor, Editor
If you ever saw Joey Galasso wrestle, you know he’s one focused individual. The middle weight prospect from Father Judge High School in southeastern Pennsylvania has seen his stock rise over the last two years with placings at major national tournaments due to, in large part, unwavering poise. Perhaps best illustrating that was his state finals overtime win against Tyson Dippery.
Late Tuesday, Galasso informed FLO that he will take that title, and the non-nonsense attitude to Cornell. He chose the Big Red over a list that included Bucknell, Penn State, Lehigh, Rugters, and Virginia Tech.
Galasso’s state title came at 138 in March. He’s rated as the 14th overall recruit in the country on our SR Big Board, and projects as a 141/149lber. He’s currently ranked 4th at 145, but before we got off the phone, he told me to get ready to move him up because he has his eyes set on the #1 spot.
That’s the Joey Galasso in know.
Here's what else he had to tell me.
WS: Why did you ultimately choose Cornell?
JG: I chose Cornell because it was the best of both academics and athletics. 5th in the country in wrestling and an ivy league education is hard to beat!
WS: What is your relationship like with the wrestlers and coaches at Cornell?
JG: My relationship with the coaches is pretty good. My high school coaches and the Cornell coaches are good friends. My team goes to a camp up there every summer so I know them pretty well. I have a pretty good relationship with some of the wrestlers, and some i dont even know so it should be a good mix of meeting new people and hanging out with my old pals.
WS: What other schools were you looking at?
JG: I was strongly considering Lehigh, Penn State, Bucknell, Rutgers and VTech.
WS: What are your plans for the summer?
JG: I plan on getting my technique on point and getting stronger, and getting ready for my senior season!
WS: On the mat, you’re extremely focused. You have that non-nonsense mean streak. Where do you draw that from and what are you thinking when you step on the mat.
JG: Well as a kid I never had the best technique, growing up in inner-city Philadelphia its hard to find a good club. So i just replaced it by making the guy im wrestling not want to be on the mat with me.
WS: What are your favorite wrestlers to watch? And what wrestler would you like to model your style after?
JG: I love watching Dake, man. I love his confidence. I also like JO, David Taylor, Ed Ruth. I dont really model it after any one wrestler. I take the bits and pieces I like from everyone and try to make them work for me.
WS: Anything else you'd like to say?
JG: Go Flo!!
Congratulations to the Galasso Family and the Cornell Wrestling Program!
