The nation's #1 heavyweight is going to the nation's #1 team.

Nick Nevills, a highly touted prospect from perennial powerhouse Clovis (CA), has given his verbal agreement to attend Penn State in the fall of 2014.

Nevills has posted a high school career that rivals the best in the long and competitive history in Cali preps. He won a state title as a Freshman Heavyweight in 2011, and is a two-time FloNationals finalist and this year's champion.

Clovis Co-Head Coach, Ben Holscher gave glowing praise of his star pupil. "Nick's been a pleasure to coach because he is self motivated and willing to learn. He always comes to us asking questions on how to improve. And he does whatever we put in front of him as hard as he can."

According to Holscher, one of Nevills' best attributes is as a teammate. "He has been a good example for the younger kids in the program from the standpoint that he is always trying to improve and not afraid to try new techniques even if it means getting scored on in practice. That mentality is one of the big reasons he has had the success he has in competition. And the other kids in the program take note of that."

In addition to being the #1 Heavyweight, Nevills, with a high pinning percentage (44 in his perfect 53-0 Junior season), he's also ranked #5 in our Pound-for-Pound rankings. Among the most highly coveted recruits in next year's class, Nick had an early list of Ohio State, Stanford, Oklahoma, and Oklahoma State in addition to the Lions.

I had the opportunity to talk with Nick about his decision. Here's what he had to say.

WS: Why did you ultimately choose Penn State?

NN: I chose Penn State for a number of reasons. State College has an awesome feeling in the air. Just walking around the campus and town you get the feeling that wrestling is a big deal to everyone there. It's the place that I am ready to make my new home and win big matches and win individual and team championships!

WS: What is your relationship with the coaches and wrestlers at Penn State like?

NN: My relationship with the coaches I believe is just starting. I got to officially meet all the coaches on my unofficial visit I took out to Penn State and I think there was a good feeling between the coaches and me. The Penn state team seemed really close and I got to meet a few of the guys which was awesome.

WS: What was the recruiting experience like for you?

NN: The recruiting process was actually pretty stressful. Going and seeing Ohio State and Penn State was unreal. I loved both schools and all the coaches and wrestlers at both schools. But I had to make my decision and I just had this gut feeling that Penn State is the place for me.

WS: What are your plans for the rest of the summer?

NN: My plans for the rest of the summer is to finish up the last few weeks of wrestling with my team. I also play football so I am giving it my all one last time before I go wrestle for the rest of my life!

WS: You're a real student of wrestling history. what were your favorite wrestlers to watch? And what HWT would you like to model your style after?

NN: I've watched so many Flo videos of some awesome wrestlers. My favorite wrestlers I watched this past year would have to be Quentin Wright and Logan Stieber. As far as myself, I'd like to think that I could wrestle like Stephen Neal.

WS: The Clovis Team and Community is very supportive. Like a big family. How has that helped you throughout your career?

NN: The Clovis wrestling team is a big family and that's what makes Clovis such a special place. All of the coaches are there to help you achieve your individual goals. Anytime you need their help they're there for you and when the guys on the team see the coaches working so hard it just makes them want to work that much harder. I believe there is no other high school wrestling team like Clovis.

Congratulations to the Nevill Family, the Clovis Wrestling community and Penn State.
