Cornell Wrestling Advances Three to Quarterfinals at NCAA Tournament

DES MOINES, Iowa—The Big Red wrestling team advanced Nahshon Garrett (125), Kyle Dake (165) and Steve Bosak (184) to the quarterfinals at NCAA Wrestling Tournament on Thursday night. Dake won by a 10-0 major decision, while Garrett and Bosak had wins by decision. Junior Mike Nevinger will wrestle in the consolation bracket on Friday morning at 141 pounds.


At 125 pounds, Garrett faced StanfordÂ’s Evan Silver. Silver took down Garrett with 12 seconds left in the first to take a 2-0 lead into the second. Garrett reversed Silver from his starting down position in the second and racked up 1:32 in riding time. Silver chose down to start the third period, and he was awarded a point when Garrett was given a penalty for locking his hands. With the penalty point, Silver held the lead on the scoreboard, 3-2, but Garrett had over a minute of riding time. Garrett brought the Cornell fans to their feet when he tilted Silver to earn two back points as time ran out. With riding time, Garrett won a 5-3 decision. The Big Red rookie will face returning NCAA champion and No. 3 seed Matt McDonough in the quarterfinals on Friday.


In his second match of the day, three-time NCAA champion Dake faced IndianaÂ’s Ryan Leblanc. With a double leg, Dake took down his opponent 19 seconds into the bout and rode him out for the remainder of the period. Dake chose down to start the second and patiently waited to make his escape early in the period. With a throw-by, Dake took down Leblanc midway through the second. Leblanc chose neutral to start the third and was hit with his second stalling call early in the period to give Dake a point. With 52 seconds left in the bout, Dake notched another takedown. Leblanc continued to lie flat on the mat trying not to get turned, and was hit with his third stalling call giving Dake another point. With 3:51 in riding time, Dake won a 10-0 major decision. In the quarterfinals, Dake will take on Nicholas Sulzer, the No. 8 seed from Virginia. Dake pinned Sulzer in 1:21 in the semifinals at the Southern Scuffle.


Returning NCAA champion Bosak faced NavyÂ’s Mason Bailey. After a scoreless first period, Bailey chose to start the second down and held flat to the mat the entire two minutes racking up riding time for Bosak. Bosak escaped to open the third, and with 1:51 in riding time, he won a 2-0 decision. Bosak will take on IowaÂ’s Ethen Lofthouse in the quarters on Friday. Bosak defeated Lofthouse, 3-2, at the National Duals in Minneapolis, Minn.


Mike Nevinger took on Anthony Salupo of Lehigh at 141 pounds in the consolation bracket. The two were scoreless after the first period, and Nevinger escaped from his opening down position in the second within three seconds. Nevinger increased his lead with a single leg takedown, but Salupo escaped. The Mountain Hawk wrestler came within a point in the third with an opening escape, but midway through the period Nevinger countered a shot for a takedown. Salupo escaped, but with 1:13 in riding time Nevinger won a 5-3 decision. Nevinger will face the 12th seed, Chris Mecate of Old Dominion on Friday morning.


At 149 pounds, Chris Villalonga took on EdinboroÂ’s David Habst. After a scoreless first period, Habst chose to start the second down on the mat. Villalonga racked up 1:41 in riding time before Habst was able to escape. Villalonga chose to start the third down, but was not able to escape until 32 seconds were left in the bout. Twelve seconds later Habst took him down to win a 3-1 decision. The loss knocked Villalonga out of the tournament.

 

At 197 pounds, Jace Bennett won his first consolation round match in exciting fashion by fall over Ohio StateÂ’s Andrew Campolattano in 4:48. In his second match, he dropped a 10-5 decision to Niko Brown of Tennessee Chattanooga to end his tournament with a 1-2 record.


At heavyweight, Stryker Lane dropped a 7-3 decision to AmericanÂ’s Blake Herrin. Herrin held a 4-1 lead heading into the third period. Lane escaped to open the third, but Herrin would take him down again. Lane escaped, but with 2:41 in riding time Herrin won a 7-3 decision.
