HS Team Rankings and State Report

There were twenty-two championships of one nature or another (state, duals, preps, etc) held last weekend.

In Bethlehem, Pa - Blair once again dominated National Preps. Despite missing 2x Prep Finalist, Dylan Milonas, the Bucs still outpointed Wyoming Seminary 324.5 to 236. Impressive, considering Wyoming Seminary damn good.

In Illinois - Carl Sandburg ran the gauntlet that was the 3A dual tournament, beating OPRF, Glenbard North and Marmion.

In Oklahoma, Edmond North snapped Broken Arrow's three-year stranglehold on the large school title, 125.5 to 98.5. Collinsville won 5A with five individual champs. Other team champions were Tuttle (4A) and Perry (3A).

Without a marquee team headlining the state, it's been a rather quiet year for Wisconsin. But the quality of wrestling there, on an individual level, is still among the best. Winning tournament titles last weekend were Wasau West, Luxemburg-Casco, and Lancaster.

Colorado winners were Pomona (5A), Broomfield (4A), Alamosa (3A) and Paonia (2A).

David Douglas won Oregon's big school class. Other winners were Hermiston (5A), Crook County (4A), Glide (3A), and Lowell (2A/1A).

They held state duals in Michigan where #2-St. Johns cruised to a D2 title over Lowell, 42-20. D3 went to Dundee, and Hudson won D4.

The largest division in Michigan gave us familiar foes and high drama. Davison and Detroit Catholic Central faced each other for the third time this season.

On Tap This Weekend:

A couple biggies this weekend with Ohio, Minnesota, and Cali on the docket. All three should feature intriguing team races. Although Cali has seen Bakersfield and Clovis have some close ones lately, and Poway should push Clovis this year, Ohio and Minnesota big schools haven't been this interesting in quite a while. St. Edwards leads a pack that should include Perry and Moeller in Ohio. And in Minnesota, Apple Valley will head to state as an underdog for the first time in years, behind favorite, St. Michael Albertville. The same goes for MN's Class 2A where perennial powerhouse Simley is looking up at Kasson-Mantorville.

vacaville was 13th at the clash and 8th at reno. perhaps an HM is warranted, but lets not go crazy here.

A little frustrating to not even see Vacaville mentioned. They are ranked 2nd in the State by thecaliforniawrestler.org with 10 qualifiers for the California State Meet. Hello?

How about some consideration for Good Counsel - Maryland Independent Schools State Champions (over McDonogh). 1st place at States, 7th place at Powerade, 10th place at Beast of the East and 11th place at Ironman.

oh and i must bite my tongue on the bosco falling off the map thing. theyre coming on extremely strong, but PBurg is now falling off, they got smoked by South Plainfield tonight in their home gym, the PIT...apparantly that home mat advantage fell short, imagine how bad it coulda been somewhere else

its almost impossible to do a tournament ranking. too many high schools have one kid ranked and it just isnt a practical thing

ross, that's the inherent problem, it's a dual and tourney rankings combined. i tinkered with the idea of doing separate format rankings. and im always considering it. it's just not real practical.

So since SEP is 1-0 against Montini you split the difference because Montini beats someone else? I guess i dont understand the logic. Maybe do tournament rankings and dual rankings then? Oak Park finishes 5th at Clash but then beats Montini and jumps Southeast Polk all the way to 10th?

lol. what would lead you to believe i hate iowa.

SEP never beat Allen. And they never wrestled at KC Stampede.
they won Gardner-Edgerton over HM-Broken Arrow.
yes they beat Montini, but montini isn't exactly a tournament team. They took 12th at Ironman.
but montini is an odd case. they also tied STE in a dual. so all things considered, you have to split the difference with them.
SEP is ranked exactly where they belong.

How does Southeast Polk drop 2 spots? They have won everything they have wrestled this year. They won the KC Stampede over #12 Allen. They won the Cheesehead over #11 Montini and #22 Apple Valley. They just dominated the Ed Winger (10 in semis). They are so deep too, lost 3 division 1 recruits last year with Cory Clark and Alex Meyer to Iowa and Willie Miklus to OTC(Missouri). Need to give Iowa some credit West Delaware and Davenport Assumption need to atleast be HM.

This is flawed logic, you can't base a teams ~projected performance~ based on athletes that are ~not performing.~

For example the high school team I coach for has a stud out with disciplinary problems. Should I tell the other wrestlers that we would have won a tournament because his points weren't included in the scores? Not a Chance. That wrestler isn't there to score the points, same goes for an injury.
If they can't score team points they shouldn't be included in the team calculation.

My team wrestled at Doc B, but we 3 wrestlers out for that tourney. But "if" they had wrestled, and "if" they had won, then we would have won the tourney. So technically we won Doc B -- at least according to Saylor's logic. I'll tell my team today that we won Doc B.

I agree with the anonymous poster below: rankings should not be based on "ifs" and "whens" ("when" or "if" they get their studs back, they'll be the best). No other sport does that, so wrestling shouldn't either. Wyoming Seminary was beat by Clovis at Doc B, and BOTH teams had guys out for injuries. BOTH!!! But injuries or not, you go with the current results for rankings. Saying that Wyoming Sem "won" Doc B, as you said, is an insult and makes no sense. I am not a fan of either Sem or Clovis (I am from Ohio), but you've got to be fair and more in line with sports rankings when you do this, "Ifs" and "Whens" aren't valid criteria. Every team I have ever wrestled on has had injured guys during the year...it's part of the sport....and I never expected us to be ranked higher based on the possibility that our injured wrestlers would be miraculously healed the next day.

Totally agree Willie with regard to St. Johns, they are a MUCH MUCH better big tournament team than they are a dual team because they have 4 or 5 holes in their lineup. As far as a big tournament team they are top 3 in the nation, dual wise they are not close to that imo. I could very easily see them beat St Eds at at tourney like Ironman. Its a shame we couldn't see Whitford wrestle vs Bright and Collica as he really doesn't have any competition in the state of Michigan even bumping up a weight or 2

You keep using "ifs" and "when's" rankings are supposed to be right now... So if a team loses all of their studs to injury you're going to keep them in with an argument saying "if they were at full strength" but they aren't!!! All you have to do is update when the teams get healthy and move them
Back up... Rankings should be current teams not "what they can be" in that case if Eric Morris and Chance and IMar and Mark Hall all transferred to SJB they wld be number one... A little over the top, but the word "if" is the standout word in that sentence.

Montini was 12th at Ironman. they aren't a really good deep tournament team.

Canon-Mac: you gotta remember they've had no Chishko, who will be back in a few weeks, this entire year and are still performing well. He's worth mega points in any format.
Frankly, Seminary's injuries drives me nuts. but at full strength they're still up there. if they aren't at full strength by the end of the year, they'll drop.
my personal opinion is that ST Johns is too low. I know i've had them (and still have them) higher than everyone else, and im glad i do. they would have been right up there at a tournament like the ironman, and are still holding their own in duals.

Everyone keeps comparing Clovis and Wyoming Sem and saying Clovis isn't better because if Morris was healthy they would have lost. Ok well I guess we can argue "what about this or that" all day. So I'll bring up another question to Willie...wouldn't Clovis at least be ranked higher than Canon Mac since they both competed against Poway (Canon Mac at Reno and Clovis at Doc B). Canon Mac only beat Poway by 4 points (225.5 to 221.5) where Clovis beat them by 49.5 points (180 to 130.5). How do you explain Clovis not being ahead of Canon Mac when they both competed against Poway and the higher ranked team, Canon Mac, barely outscored Poway? I'd like to hear your thoughts on this one...

Willie, I think there's a lot of parity this year after Blair, but you might want to recheck comparable results from the Ironman, Reno TOC, and Doc Buchanan. Wyoming Sem, Cannon Mac, Poway, Clovis, and Montini can be reasonably compared.

Bosco should slide out. that being said, I'd add PBurg before DB.

Willie, I love your respect for the NJ teams, but don Bosco is almost fallen out of the NJ team rankings. They have a few very good kids ok their team in the lower weights with beirdumpfel and Gonzalez, but until 195, they have nothing. A team to maybe slide in is delbarton. They have a solid lineup from 106 through 170 no holes at all, just have no one after 170. Definitely more of an HM than DBP

McDonogh? yeah. i guess they have a case for 25-ish. was concerned about their dual ability. but they did well at VA Duals. I'll consider it going forward.

I think Willie's assessment of this past weekend is very good. Robinson wrestled hard. None of their wrestlers backed down and they are obviously well trained and well coached. As a Sem "parent" I want to say congratulations to Robinson on a hard fought victory.

Not only did lowly true public school Robinson defeat an albeit depleted #3 Sem...they also defeated catholic school Don Bosco who you have in HM...that certainly should put them at least in the HM category.
