Now in its 13th year, Super32 has developed into the premier preseason tournament, if not the most loaded event of the entire year. In addition to the outstanding wrestling we get to witness every year in North Carolina, it’s interesting now to watch S32 alumni now competing at the next level. Four of the ten 2012 NCAA Champions once graced the Super32 mats. And over a quarter, 22 of 80 All Americans in St. Louis, competed here.

Below are weight class capsules listing contenders with a brief sampling of accomplishments. And finally, I’ll conclude by running the numbers of ranked guys in the field.

If the sheer number of notable entries listed here seems like overkill, it’s not. Talent abounds at Super32. Tough kids flock in from every corner of the country.  There are land mines everywhere. Some you know, some you don’t. But if they have a good tournament here, we sure won’t forget them afterward. Every year the Super32 creates stars out of previously unknown commodities. Who will emerge this year?

Nearly 1500 entries head to Greensboro yet again this year. And there are very few easy outs. The field, in general, has become deeper from top to bottom. Mega stars fall on the first day. Remember last year? Who saw Maverick Passaro, Jamel Hudson, Matt McCutcheon, or Tim Dudley breaking out in such fashion?

That will happen again. But where? And when? And who will fall to the under-the-radar guys? That’s what makes the Super32 so compelling.

Look for frequent updates (including the bracket release) and results on FLO and on twitter (@WillieAtFlo) and @flowrestling), and watch as we upload videos to our coverage page.

Last note: There’s a Middle School component, too. If you haven’t noticed, the Super32 MS tournament has evolved in to a true national showcase for the next generation of t alent. The MS field is loaded with studs, and has become one of THE places to go for the little beasts on the youth circuit.

Field Highlights:
Weight movement and emerging talent effect the opening weight class more than any other. In the off season, there’s a lot to sort out. So, there may not be that many ranked kids here to start the tournament, but this bracket is full of the next generation of top talent, many of who will be ranked by the time the bracket plays out.
In addition to the All Class Top 20, seven wrestlers here are ranked in their grade.
Pletcher is far and away the favorite. He was a semifinalist here last year as an 8th grader and has incredible short offense and lateral motion.

Now You Know Him: In 3 out of the last 4 years, PA has produced an 8th grade placer at S32. Two of the three (Pletcher, Moisey) came at 103. The other (Chishko) came at 112. Look for Spencer Lee to become the latest PA phenom.

Darkhorse:
I expect St. Paris-Graham’s Eli Stickley to be vastly improved. Keep an eye on him. He could very well emerge as one of the country’s best.

FLO Picks: 1. Pletcher, PA   2. Lee, IN   3. Cavallo, PA   4. Lee, PA
5. Suriano, NJ   6. Mueller, TX   7. HM-Bierdumpfel, NJ   8. Rodriguez, OH

Sr. Cody Karns, NC - State Runner-Up
Sr. Tanner Shoap, PA - State Placer
Jr. Armando Torres, OH

Field Highlights:
This weight has a little of everything. Six of the Top 10 in America are here. Joseph at 18 makes it seven total ranked wrestlers. But there are a horde of guys sitting on the verge of a ranking. And also several grade-ranked wrestlers making their debut and looking to make a name for themselves.
Valencia keeps on keeping on. As a Freshman, he won almost everything. He’ll be a force to be reckoned with, and having the focus beyond his years will serve him well in a tournament where you have to win several consecutive close bouts to capture the title.
He’s clearly the favorite, and will be ridiculously huge by the time day two rolls around, but I’m saying he’ll stub his toe somewhere along the line. Just a hunch.

Now You Know Him: Ohio’s Jarred Ganger, who beat Matt Kolodzik (Ironman and Fargo Champ) a districts a week before their state tournament. He’ll make noise here.

Darkhorse: Nick Piccininni has been wrestling really well, going undefeated at both IHI and Journeymen. But can he reach the next level and knock off the national elite? I’ll be watching him closely.

FLO Picks:   1. Millhof, GA   2. Valencia, CA    3. Parker, PA     4. Russell, GA
5. Fleetwood, DE   6. Ozias, VA   7. Gromacki, PA   8. Kelly, OH

So. Connor Prince, FL - State Runner-Up, NHSCA
So. Sal Profaci, NJ - Iron Horse Champ

Jr. Zach Ulerick, PA - State Placer

Field Highlights:
Incredible field. The Top 3 kids in the country are here with a total of 9 ranked wrestlers. There are also 8 others who have previously been ranked and are now Honorable Mention.
A Super32 belt is the one jewel that has eluded Tomasello. Cruz topped him in the 2010 final. Tomasello lost in last year’s final to Indiana’s Jarred Brooks.
Brady, who is undeniably talented, will make is first appearance at a folk major in quite some time.
Cruz is moving up two weights. Terao had his coming out party at Fargo, beating Michael Kemerer after not placing at S32 last year.

Now You Know Him: Phil Anderson doesn’t get a lot of pub, but don’t be surprised if he wins a couple he’s not supposed to.

Darkhorse:
Watch for PA’s Zach Ulerick, who had a great state tournament when he knocked off Krivus.
Also take a gander at Leewallen and Basler, who met at NHSCA FR. finals. And Indiana’s Nick Lee might be one of the country’s ‘next big things’. They’re talented, albeit green.

FLO Picks:   1. Tomasello, OH   2. Wert, VA    3. Terao, HI   4. Cruz, PA
5. Brady, AZ   6. Krivus, PA   7. Forys, PA   8. Lucas, FL

Jr. Mike Pongracz, NJ - State Placer
Sr. Mike Rix, OH - State Placer
Jr. Anthony Tutulo, OH - State Runner-Up

Field Highlights:
Nothing special. Just #1 vs. #2 potential. Between Jeske and Dance, the two have a combined 5 finals appearances at S32. In fact, Dance has never failed to reach the finals here. Jeske won the last two head-to-heads (in Ironman and Beast). And both have won Fargo.
Oh, if that’s not enough for you, there are two returning S32 Champs here. Ryan Diehl who famously missed weight at 113 last year, moved up to 120, and won the whole damn thing anyway. And Michael Kemerer (106).

Now You Know Him: Brandon James is an incredible young buck. He gets less press than he should. But I expect that to change after this weekend when he does some damage.

Darkhorse: Joe Velliquette was ranked at the end of last year as after knocking off the ultra talented Ke-Shawn Hayes to win a state title at 106. He’s up a bunch of weight here, so we’ll see how he adjusts. But he’s a tough out.

FLO Picks:   1. Jeske, VA   2. Dance, VA   3. Diehl, PA   4. Robinson, TN
5. Kemerer, PA   6. James, IN   7. Saavedra, CA   8. Gross, MN

Field Highlights:
Uh. Yeah. Just stupid.
Except for #1-Kevin Norstrem who’s out with an injury he sustained in Fargo, all the Top 10 kids are here. Has that ever happened before in the history of high school wrestling?

This bracket is going to be chaos, trust me. As much as we all want to believe those top kids are untouchable, some will fall due to the talent and depth of the HM kids. It’s inevitable. In fact, it’s difficult to even pick the guys for the categories below.

Now You Know Him: There are a lot of people that already know of Aaron Pico. But this will be his first official high school match. He’s the real deal, folks. If that’s not a sexy enough pick for you, I’ll give you Cody LeCount. Love this kid. You will too.

Darkhorse: Nick Bennett can upset some folks. But the ultimate darkhorse/boom-or-bust pick, not only in this weight class, but in the entire tournament, is Abdulshakur. He’s incredibly raw and still learning. And he’s pretty inconsistent. So the question becomes ‘can he put it together in the consecutive match grinder that is the Super32’. But he’s beaten a bunch of ranked kids, including Zain Retherford in Greco.

FLO Picks:   1. Pico, CA   2. Heil, OH   3. Nolf, PA   4. Delvecchio, NJ
5. LeCount, IN   6. Massa, MI   7. Atkinson, VA    8. Schmitt, MI

Jr. Walker Dempsey, NJ -NHSCA So. 4th
Sr. Ethan Kenney, PA - State Placer
Fr. Austin Kraisser, MD
So. Kade Kowalski, OH - NHSCA Fr. Champ
Jr. Brock Zacherl, PA

Field Highlights:
Zain Retherford is coming off an unprecedented run this summer, winning NHSCA JR’s, Fila’s, Fargo, and Cadet World’s. His motor and relentlessness is unmatched. And though I keep saying he’s too small for 138, he keeps proving me wrong. As talented as this bracket is, there’s really only one kid in this group that I think can go with him. The question is, can he make it through the gauntlet to get there.

Now You Know Him: I’ll give you two. Lapaglia is super talented. He’s been ranked for a while, so you might know him by name. Now get to see him first hand. The second is NJ’s Ronnie Gentile who didn’t wrestle in the state tourney as a freshman due to injury. But he made a splash at Fargo. He’s a dynamo.

Darkhorse:
Brock Zacherl. If there’s some upsets to be made in this bracket, they might come from this kid who looks to be on the verge of exploding.

FLO Picks:   1. Miller, NJ    2. Retherford, PA    3. Molloy, IN    4. Lapaglia, MO
5. Heilman, NJ   6. Valencia, CA   7. Dippery, PA     8. Baldwin, FL

Sr. Jordan Marshall, OH - State Champ
Jr. Alec Panteleo, MI - State Champ
Fr. Jake Shaffer, PA - S32 MS Runner-Up
Jr. Jake Spengler, FL - State Champ

Field Highlights:
Outside of a ridiculously stacked Powerade bracket last year, Chishko has always been a bridesmade. He’s a three-time S32 placer going into just his Junior year. He’s the prohibitive favorite and I think he gets it done this year.
The guy I’d watch out for to upset the apple cart is Missouri’s Grant Leeth. He’s stud, and build like an ox. He had a pretty off summer, but if he’s clicking, he’ll be as dangerous as anyone.

Now You Know Him: Toby Hague was a stud coming up through the ranks. And though his results in high school have been hit-and-miss, it’s largely because he has to wrestle ‘up’ above teammates Myles Martin and Jack Clark. Down here at a more fitting weight class, he could surprise.

Darkhorse: Watch for Old Dominion commitment, Jordan Marshall. He’s a steady kid who could make a run here.

FLO Picks:    1. Chishko, PA    2. Anciete, NV    3. Leeth, MO    4. Lopez, CA
5. Marshall, OH     6. Cotten, PA     7. Hague, MD    8. Duggan, PA

Sr. Josh Farrell, IN - State Runner-Up
Sr. Nick Hall, AL - State Champ
Sr. Ray Nicosia, PA - State Placer
So. Ricky Regas, TX - State Champ
Sr. Wayne Stinson, NJ - 2010 Fargo AA

Field Highlights:
I’d pay to watch Hammond and Hall roll. Over/Under 20 points. Hammond takes more chances than Marky Mark, but Hall will roll with the punches. Much more sophisticated than his age suggests.

Watch out for Shayne Tucker though. He’s been wrestling very well and I think he’ll have a great showing here.

Darkhorse: I really want to get a look at Corsaro who was a State Runner-Up last year as a freshman to none other than #1-Jason Tsirtsis. I don’t have a good pulse on him, put he’s at the top of my watch list.

FLO Picks:  1. Hall, MI   2. Hammond, PA   3. Tucker, CA   4. Lavalle, NV

5. Hall, AL   6.Cooper, KY     7. Corsaro, IN    8. Hoffman, MD

HM-Sr. Zack Voytek, PA - State Placer
HM-Sr. Ty Walter, PA - State Placer, Returning S32 6th
Sr. Greg Bacci, PA - National Prep Placer
Sr. Connor Hedash, PA

Field Highlights:
Really loaded weight here with more than half of the nation’s elite. Llopez recently informed Flo he’ll be going 160 for Super32 (and likely the foreseeable future). Meaning, we could be in for a FloNationals’ finals rematch between him and Martinez. A third Flonats finalist, Askey, is also in the field. All three of these guys scrap and should make for exciting and high-scoring affairs.

Now You Know Him: Most of the country doesn’t get to see Dakota boys, so check out Ryan Blees. He’s both technical and athletic. I think he’ll have a solid showing here.

Darkhorse: Abraham Rodriguez has dominated Oregon to the tune of three state titles. But after winning an NHSCA title as a Frosh, he hasn’t been on the national scene much, so he’s fallen off the radar a bit. If he surprises, it’s not surprising. Does that make sense?

FLO Picks:   1. Martinez, CA    2. Llopez, MD     3. Askey, GA    4. Peppelman, PA
5. Rodriguez, OR    6. Bradley, IN    7. Blees, ND    8. Law, PA

Sr. Terrell Forbes, NJ - State Placer
Sr. Matt Gancayo, MD - State Champ
Sr. Keaton Subjeck, CA - State Placer

Field Highlights:
Five of the nation’s Top 10 will clash here. Weircioch leads the way. He’s so sound defensively and opportunistic, I don’t see anyone taking him out. That’s not to say he won’t face tight matches an be pushed. I just think he’ll persevere.
Talk about ‘defensively sound,’ Kee is about as ’square’ as you can get. He rarely gives you an opening, and he’s coming off a great win over Epperly.

Now You Know Him: I think there are several clear tiers here. What will be interesting is to see what kids break through to the next level. For instance, if VonEgidy, solid-but-not- spectacular, posts a win over one of the top three, he’ll transcend his current status. Another kid that i think has that has the potential to up his profile in that way is Renda.

Darkhorse: I’ll go with Gancayo and Griego as guys who surprise.

Sr. Liam Korbul, NJ - State Placer
Fr. Drew Phipps, PA
Jr. Armani Robinson, OH - State Runner-Up, Fargo AA
Sr. Nick Zak, NJ - State Placer

Field Highlights:
I really like this weight class for its uncertainty. DesLauriers and Taylor are both so solid positioning-wise. Can it thwart Barber’s explosiveness. That kid’s firing on all cylinders. Ness is another one that’s ultra talented. But frankly, he gets lazy at times, and you can’t do that in a tournament where one sequence means all the difference in the world.

Now You Know Him: I’ve been hearing nothing but rave reviews about both Haught’s ability and his drive. Really anxious to see him this weekend. Don’t be surprised if he’s a household name by Sunday.

Darkhorse: Armani Robinson has showed promise. He could surprise.

FLO Picks:  1. Barber, CA    2. Taylor, PA    3. DesLauriers, PA    4. Toal, OH
5. Haught, WV     6. Linton, OH     7. Jackson, FL    8. Ness, GA

Sr. Alfredo Giancarri, PA - National Prep 7th
Sr. Brandon Marcoux-Schaefer, VT - State Champ
Sr. Matt Moore, NJ - State Placer
Sr. Alen Turcinhodzic, PA - Fargo GR Finalist

Field Highlights:
McCutcheon rose to national prominence at the S32 last year. And I think he clearly takes the belt again. O’Donnell and Hart in the next ‘tier.’

Darkhorse: Turcinhodzic is a monster. He showed up at Fargo as a complete unknown and reached the finals of GR. I don’t think he’ll make a serious run at the title, but ya never know.

FLO Picks:    1. McCutcheon, PA    2. O’Donnell, PA    3. Hart, PA    4. Burroughs, VA
5. Stephanos, FL    6. Bonner, NJ     7. Moore, NJ    8. Neff, MD

Sr. Trevor Stevens, GA - State 4th, Returning S32 6th
Sr. Eldon Valery, VA - State Runner-Up, NHSCA Jr. 3rd
Fr. Jordan Wood, PA

Field Highlights:
If J’Den Cox does in fact go HWT this year, you’re looking at the the #1 and #2 220lbers in all the land. And they have styles that couldn’t be any more different. Snyder is everything you want and teach: heart, technique, power. Haines is an athletic freak that pulls things out of left field. I’ll take Snyder all day, but I’m making popcorn for this one.

Darkhorse: There are two other returning S32 medalists: Kramer and Allen. But the kid I’m interested in is NC’s Hutchinson, who I’ve gotten some calls about from college coaches. He could make a dent here.

FLO Picks:   1. Snyder, MD    2. Haines, PA    3. Correnti, NJ    4. Hutchinson, NC
5. Valery, VA    6. Tolley, IN    7. Kramer, TN    8. Stevens, GA

Field Highlights:
Webb and Garren wrestled in the finals of NHSCA’s with Webb edging him and earning his second grade crown in VA Beach.
Coe just wrestled a tight, 1-pt bout with nationally ranked Gage Hutchison in the finals of the GFC.

Darkhorse: Luke Fleck was a state qualifier last year and had a productive summer at duals. Him and Boyd from OH could make a push.

FLO Picks:   1. Garren, OH   2. Webb, VT    3. Fleck, PA    4. Robertson, NC
5. Boyd, OH    6. DeLeon, TX    7. Kania, NJ    8. Wood, MI
