Beaver Wrestlers Practice in front of Orange and Black Faithfull
Team holds its first of three public practices this fall before an OSU home football game
CORVALLIS, Ore. – The Oregon State men’s wrestling team competed in front of fans for the first
time this fall as they held an open practice for the public to attend before the Beaver’s home football game against Washington State.
A few dozen fans lined the bleachers in front of the Dale Thomas Wrestling Room to watch their favorite OSU wrestlers take to the mats so they could practice moves as well
as techniques for the upcoming season.
“To me it’s always good as a coach to see who steps up in practices like this because they are usually the guys who step it up in competition,” said seventh year head coach
Jim Zalesky. “It depends what kind of competitor you are. If you are real good competitor you are excited about it because fans are coming here to watch you practice.”
Saturday’s session lasted close to two hours just to give fans enough time to make the short trip across the parking lot to Reser Stadium for the afternoon’s football game.
The Beavers are ranked preseason No. 9 in the nation by D1 College Wrestling, which is the highest entering a season during the Zalesky era. In addition there are a total
of seven different OSU wrestlers with national rankings heading into the regular season including returning All-Americans Mike Mangrum and Scott Sakaguchi.
Zalesky’s squad will officially start practicing on Wednesday, Oct. 10 and will hold two more open practices for the public. The first is scheduled for homecoming weekend,
Saturday, Oct. 20, between three and three and a half hours before the OSU football team’s kick-off with Utah.
The final preseason public practice will be on Saturday, Nov. 3, during Dad’s weekend, again three to three and a half hours prior to the Beaver’s home football game with
Arizona State. Times for the home two football games (vs. Utah and Arizona St.) have yet to be announced. Once those are released, those planning to attend the public practices can arrive accordingly.
