Zalesky Given Three-Year Contract Extension Through 2016
Seventh-year wrestling coach has guided the Beavers to 76 wins and three conference titles
CORVALLIS, Ore. – Oregon State Director of Athletics Bob De Carolis announced Tuesday, that wrestling head coach Jim Zalesky’s contract has been extended an additional three years through June 2016. His previous contract was set to expire at the same time in 2013.
In his six seasons on the bench, the reigning Pac-12 Conference Wrestling Coach of the Year has continued the Beavers’ winning track record on the mat, amassing a 76-29-2 record and a .720 winning percentage. He has won three conference titles (2007, 2010 and 2012) during his time in Corvallis and has produced six NCAA All-Americans. Additionally he has seen seven of his student-athletes win individual conference championships.
“Coach Zalesky has done a tremendous job and I’m enthusiastic about the future of the program,” De Carolis said. “His track record of success in the sport speaks for itself and I believe that our wrestling program will continue to grow with him in the leadership role.”
With just 24-more victories, Zalesky will become only the third coach in OSU program history to reach the 100-win plateau. Dale Thomas (1957-90) at 616 and Joe Wells (1993-06) at 161 are the only other coaches to earn 100 wins or more in their careers while at Oregon State.
Zalesky is a native of Shueyville, Iowa and graduated from the University of Iowa in 1984, where he was four-time All-American and three-time NCAA champion at 158 pounds. He has previously been an assistant with Minnesota and Iowa as well as a head coach at his alma mater. While coach of the Hawkeyes, he won three straight national championships from 1998-2000. Zalesky was inducted into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame in 2004.
