Fargo Week 2012!
Willie Saylor, Editor

There are few events that get my head spinning as much as the one that occurs every year in late July.

Fargo, North Dakota rolls out the red carpet for what is annually the largest and most diverse talent field in the sport at the high school level: The USA Wrestling Cadet and Junior Freestyle and Greco Roman National Championships.

More NCAA National Champions, All Americans, and Olympic Team Members have competed at the event than any other single tournament. And this year’s field at Fargo is sure to keep that treadmill of production going in future years.

Last year over 2,200 high school wrestlers convened to hash it out on Fargodome’s 28 mats. Usual suspects will contend for titles, new faces will emerge as legit national talents, and we’ll be following along every step of the way.

As Flowrestling gears up for Fargo, we’ll give you scheduling details, last year’s final results and team scores, and a few tidbits that highlighted the 2011 edition. Later in the week, we’ll have comprehensive previews for all four of the men’s styles. Watch for updates and features from the Fargodome floor all week long as another epic event unfolds.

Flashback: Highlights of Fargo Week 2011
Doi Times Two – The Doi sisters, Marina and Regina, of California, are special. They dominate against other girls and even win their fair share against boys. They won the first two weight classes in Cadet Women’s and are sure to be players on the Women’s scene for years to come.

Imported – Czech born Peter Nagy surprised everyone by running through the bracket at 140lbs in Cadet Greco. The foreign exchange student was living in Iowa.

Not on Sundays – Due to observance of religious beliefs, a handful of wrestlers competed up at Juniors for the Greco portion, and then back down at Cadets later in the week for Freestyle. Most notable was Utah’s Grant LaMont, who placed 3rd in each tournament.

Bumping Up – It’s a long and grueling week. Holding weight that long is a job unto itself. Here are a couple guys that wrestled Greco at one weight, before moving up for Free: Ronnie Bresser (OR), 1st at 98, 2nd at 105; Zane Richards (IL) 2nd at 125, 1st at 130; Rossi Bruno (FL) 1st at 125, 3rd at 130; Alex Dierenger (WI), 1st at 152, 1st at 160; Ricky Roberson (IL), 2nd at 160, 1st at 171; Jahwon Akui (IL), 1st at 171, 2nd at 189.

Golden, Not Perfect – With the pool system, one can lose a match and still make the finals. In one of the oddest cases I’ve ever seen, last year Parker VonEgidy (NC) lost two bouts at Cadet 171, and still won his bracket. His finals opponent, Rickey Robertson, also had a loss. Here’s a list of the kids that won the whole enchilada despite a loss: Cadet GR 130, Elijah Davis (CA); Cadet GR 135, Rich Martinez (CA); Cadet FS 91, Gannon Volk (MN); Cadet FS 112, Seth Gross (MN), Cadet FS 125, Edgar Bright (OH); Cadet FS 140, Collin Holler (IL); Cadet FS 171, Rickey Roberston (IL); Junior FS 135, Ben Whitford (MI); Junior FS 145, Brian Realbuto (NY); Junior FS 285, Connor Medbery (WI). For those scoring at home, that’s 15% of champions that had a loss out of the 64 weight classes.

Team Supreme – Illinois won three of four men’s styles for the second straight year, giving them 8 over a three year period. It was punctuated with 3 Champs, 4 Runners-Up and a whopping 93pts in the JR Freestyle finale.

Double Dipping – Wrestlers who won both styles: Gannon Volk (MN), Aaron Pico (CA), Chance Marsteller (PA), Mitch Sliga (IN), and Sam Stoll (MN) in Cadets. Nkosi Moody (IL), Ben Whitford (MI), Alex Dierenger (WI), and Devin Peterson (WI) in Juniors.
