NCAA Brackets Released!

Anybody know why Chris Perry dropped to 174lb? I know he was a bit undersized for 184lb, but he beat everybody at that weight, included the #1 guy, Joe LeBlanc. So he cut weight to move into a weight class that's a bit stacked at the top. Seems strange. His chances of NCAA gold seemed better at 184lb. Maybe it was for the team? Maybe he has a shot against Ruth -- hard to say because both Ruth and Perry have improved a lot this year. And the Stanford kid has been a ghost...so who knows if he's a threat.

Chris Honeycutt lost in his conference finals to Matt Wilps (Pittsburgh).

He is seeded #2.
Some may say that this is like the Asper situation, where Asper, previously undefeated, lost to a wrestler that he had beat in the past.
However it is NOT the same.
Honeycutt had a MUCH tougher schedule and beat wrestlers that justifies his seed.
Honeycutt has beaten the following NCAA qualifiers:
#3 Matt Wilps (Pitt)
#6 Brent Haynes (Missouri)
#7 Mario Gonzalez (Illinois)
#8 Matt Powless (Indiana)
#11 Micah Burak (Penn)
UNS Brandon Palik (Drexel)
UNS Taylor Meeks (Oregon State)
UNS Max Huntley (Michigan)
UNS James Nakashima (Nebraska)
UNS Keith Witt (Kent State)
Therefore it is completely justified to keep him at the #2 seed, even with a loss last weekend.
Go compare that to Asper's wins. It is obvious why they were treated differently.

Here is the true reasoning behind the Amuchastegui seeding.

First, a head to head last year is NOT considered into seeding for this year.
Amuchastegui missed the full month of December. This places him behind any other undefeated wrestlers at 174. This factor is more important than a finish from last year.
Ruth's past AA finish at 174 and strength of schedule placed him above Chris Perry. In addition, he finished well ahead of Amuchastegui in the RPI rankings. This is mostly due to strong schedule for Ruth, weak schedule for Amuchastegui. Ruth's domination of the weight class compared to Amuchastegui merely beating the competition also separates the two.
The killer for Amuchastegui is being out the month of December. In addition, head to head from last year does NOT count.
The seeding for 157 last year was different because Hall, Fittery, and Taylor were all undefeated and wrestled full season.
In addition, there were several new faces on the seeding committee.
And don't think conspiracy, Stanford head coach was on the seeding committee.
Fair seeding.

The seedings matter. There are only 3 guys at 174 who could win the national championship. The guys who are seeded 2 and 3 have to beat BOTH of the other contenders. The 1 seed just has to win in the finals.
Even though I think Ruth is the best, I don't see how you could seed Amuch as anything other than 1. He was a finalist last year when he beat Ruth. He was ranked #1 all year long and he didn't lose a match. Now, at the end of the year, he gets dumped down to #3?
The only positive thing I can say about it is that guys who face stronger competition throughout the year should be rewarded. The Big Ten is the only REAL wrestling conference left. The Pac 10, ACC, and schools like Okie St. and Cornell just don't face that type of competition after New Year's.
I just wish they would be consistent about it. Giving Robles the 1 seed was critical to him winning the national championship (Precin would have beaten him in the semis). The year before that, Mack Lewnes had the Hodge in his pocket going into NCAAs. Jay Borschel was also undefeated. What happened when they met in the finals? Borschel DESTROYED him! The quality of competition should matter in seedings, but it doesn't always.

Ha ha....peeps downplaying Amuchastegui..well he was injured a good month of the season, thus missed some time where he might have had huge matches. Regardless, he still smashed all he wrestled AND the Ruth apologists point to Ruth getting injured last yr which kept him from placing higher at NCAAs. Odd, it was Amuchategui's disgusting bent leg turk on Ruth that essentially ended his run. But alas, he's seeded behind the very guy he beat. No matter, Amuchastegui's a 4.0 student. He's smart enough to smash him yet again. PLus anyone sleeping on Lofthouse v Ruth has another thing coming. Perry has had essentially NO time at 74s with 1 nice win there. In no way should that garner a higher seed than a guy who's taken 2nd and wrestled ALL SEASON at 74s. Tis all good though, one has to win the matches.

Definitely. but McIntosh should be able to get passed Meeks and IF hes able to make it to the AA round in the wrestlebacks and the seeds hold, he should wrestle Mario Gonzalez who I believe he can beat. But that's a big IF.

What happens if a seeded wrestler scratches this week? Do they reseed? Do they add another wildcard? What changes in the brackets? Redraw?
